How to Convert Mohs Hardness Scale to HV
BASIC MOHS HARDNESS SCALE
The table below shows the Mohs hardness scale of the 10 fundamental minerals.
Interesting fact: A human fingernail has a hardness of approximately 2.5; a copper coin 3.5; a knife blade 5.5; window glass 5.5; and a steel file about 6.5. Using materials with known hardness values allows us to accurately determine the relative hardness of an unknown material on the Mohs scale.
Modified Mohs Hardness Scale
The Modified Mohs Hardness Scale was introduced by the Mineralogical Society of America to classify materials whose hardness falls between the standard reference minerals.
Note: The Mohs Hardness Scale is a relative, non-linear scale. This means that the actual difference in hardness between two consecutive reference minerals is not uniform across the scale. For example, the hardness difference between Corundum and Diamond is significantly greater than the difference between Talc and Corundum.

Summary:
The Mohs Hardness Scale, widely used in Gemology and Mineralogy, was introduced in 1822 by the German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs. He selected ten common minerals with varying hardness levels that were readily available in high purity. These ten minerals were arranged in ascending order of hardness and assigned values from 1 to 10.
