Kalenborn – ceramics and composite steel

Kalenborn is a German specialist in wear protection materials and engineered solutions for industrial equipment.

Its portfolio covers metallic, mineral and ceramic materials, hard compounds and engineering plastics. Different material groups are designed for different combinations of abrasion, erosion, impact, temperature and material build-up.

Gia Anh (GAC) is an authorised Kalenborn dealer in Vietnam, supplying genuine Kalenborn materials together with technical consulting, material selection and wear protection solutions.

Why a multi-material wear protection supplier matters?

Steel is not the answer to every wear problem.

Some operating points are exposed to temperatures where conventional steel solutions become limited. Some experience high-velocity erosion and require an extremely hard wear surface. Others suffer from material build-up, where smoothness and flow behaviour can matter as much as hardness.

Different problems require different material systems.

That is why GAC works with a broad Kalenborn portfolio rather than relying on one material for every wear point.

Depending on the wear mechanism, impact level, temperature, material build-up and equipment geometry, materials can be selected or combined to match the actual operating conditions.

Seven material groups. Different working ranges.

The right material is not selected by hardness alone.

Each material group has a different role depending on the wear mechanism and operating environment.

KALMETALL

KALMETALL is a hard overlay welded steel system developed for severe wear conditions where abrasion may occur together with impact.

Typical applications include chutes, hoppers, pipes, fan housings, cyclones and other components in bulk material handling systems.

ABRESIST

ABRESIST is fused cast basalt with a hard, smooth surface for protection against abrasive wear.

It is commonly used to line chutes, hoppers, bunkers, pipes and bulk material handling systems. Its low-friction surface can also promote material flow in suitable applications.

KALOCER

KALOCER is a high-alumina ceramic with very high hardness and wear resistance.

It is designed for plant components exposed to extreme abrasive wear, including cyclones, bunkers, chutes and transfer points.

Per Kalenborn documentation, KALOCER can operate at temperatures of up to approximately 1,200°C, depending on the installation conditions.

KALCOR

KALCOR is a zirconium corundum ceramic developed for severe abrasion combined with high or fluctuating temperatures.

Typical applications include cyclones, hot-material chutes, pipelines and other areas exposed to high particle velocity or thermal cycling.

KALSICA

KALSICA is a silicon carbide ceramic for applications combining severe wear with high thermal loads.

It is suitable for components such as cyclones, pipelines, distributors and other areas where abrasion and elevated temperatures occur together.

KALCRET

KALCRET is a wear-resistant, cement-bonded high-performance concrete and hard compound.

Depending on the product form, it can be applied by trowelling, casting or spraying, making it suitable for complex geometries and large wear-exposed surfaces.

Typical applications include pipes, hoppers, cyclones, chutes and other plant components requiring large-area protection.

KALCERAM

KALCERAM is a hard ceramic material developed for applications where wear resistance and favourable sliding properties are required.

Its surface characteristics can help reduce material build-up and support more reliable flow in suitable handling applications.

The strength is not one product

Kalenborn’s strength lies in the ability to work with different material systems.

One production line may contain several wear mechanisms. A high-erosion zone may require ceramic protection, while another location exposed to heavier impact may require a metallic wear protection system.

The transition between different materials must still be engineered for the actual equipment geometry, loads and installation conditions on site.

This is where site assessment and application engineering become critical.

How GAC selects the material

Not by hardness alone.

GAC starts with the conditions at the exact wear point:

  • Wear mechanism – abrasion, erosion, impact or a combination
  • Impact level – the load and impact energy acting on the lining
  • Temperature – continuous operating temperature and thermal cycling
  • Material behaviour – particle size, velocity, moisture and tendency to build up
  • Equipment geometry – shape, access and installation constraints

The objective is not to specify the hardest available material.

It is to match the material to the actual wear mechanism and operating conditions at that specific point.

From Kalenborn materials to applications in Vietnam

Kalenborn provides the material technologies and application experience.

GAC brings those materials into Vietnamese plants through site assessment, wear analysis, material selection, engineering and implementation.

With a broad range of metallic, mineral, ceramic and compound materials available, different protection systems can be specified for different areas of the same production line instead of applying one material across the entire equipment system.

The objective is straightforward: reduce localised wear damage, extend equipment service life, reduce unplanned repairs and support more reliable plant operation.
