Project overview
At the primary storage area of the Raw Material Plant, Hoa Phat Dung Quat Integrated Steel Complex, iron ore is stored and reclaimed by a high-frequency scraper reclaimer system, with an average handling capacity of approximately 800–1,500 tons/hour.
During the site inspection, GAC found significant wear on the scraper teeth and lower scraper plate. In several areas, the wear-resistant lining did not fully cover the material-contact zone, leaving the base plate directly exposed and causing localized wear.
Based on the actual condition and operating requirements, GAC proposed reinforcing the material-contact area by optimizing the lining plate dimensions, selecting a more suitable wear-resistant material configuration, and strengthening critical wear zones. The solution aims to reduce direct material contact with the base structure, limit localized wear, and improve overall system stability.
Customer Challenges
Worn scraper teeth
The Q355B scraper teeth operated in direct contact with the ore and therefore experienced severe wear. Through the site survey, many scraper tooth positions were found to be significantly worn, reducing their effective working range in the material zone
Scraper blade wear close to the base plate
The scraper blade section in the working area had experienced significant material loss. At several locations, the wear had progressed close to the base plate, reducing the effective contact area with the material stream
Existing lining plates did not fully cover the worn area
The existing lining plates had a width of approximately 50 mm, leaving part of the scraper surface directly exposed to the material stream. As a result, the Q355B base plate continued to experience localized wear during operation
Material accumulation in worn areas
When the scraper plate surface becomes worn and uneven, material may accumulate in recessed areas, particularly at locations where wear is severe. This condition may affect material flow and increase localized wear over time
CURRENT CONDITION OF THE SCRAPER PLATE
The scraper teeth and scraper blade had suffered significant wear after prolonged operation
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
PROTECT THE MATERIAL CONTACT AREA
Extend the protected surface at locations exposed to direct material contact, particularly along the scraper blade and lower scraper plate, to reduce direct wear on the base plate
WEAR RESISTANCE
Use a more suitable wear-resistant material configuration for the scraper teeth and scraper blade to reduce wear rate and extend service life under operating conditions
IMPROVE THE SCAPER PLATE CONFIGURATION
Adjust the lining plate dimensions and connection arrangement while extending the reinforced scraper tooth structure to improve protection at areas subject to concentrated wear
Construction Process
Survey operating conditions
GAC surveyed the material stream, operating capacity and operating time to determine the actual working load on the primary storage scraper plate system
Assess the existing wear condition
Inspect the scraper teeth, scraper blade and lining plates to identify areas with concentrated wear
Analyze the root causes
Compare the actual wear condition with the material configuration and existing structure to identify the primary wear mechanism
Select the material configuration
The scraper plate uses 35–40 mm-thick SS400 steel; the lining plate uses 6+6 mm Chromadur; and the scraper teeth use 10+10 mm Chromadur
Design the lining plates and connections
Increase the lining plate height from 50 mm to 150 mm, with bolted connections using M16 × 45 mm countersunk-head bolts
Finalize the fabrication method
Complete the drawings for the scraper plate body, lining plates and scraper teeth, together with the cutting method and detailed connection configuration
Project results
COMPLETED THE SCRAPER PLATE REFURBISHMENT SOLOTION
GAC completed the refurbishment solution based on the actual operating conditions and wear status at the primary storage area
EXPANDED THE WEAR-PROTECTED AREA
The lining plate height was increased from 50 mm to 150 mm, extending the protected area directly exposed to the material stream
FINALIZED THE MATERIAL AND FABRICATION CONFIGURATION
The solution specifies 6+6 mm Chromadur lining plates, 10+10 mm Chromadur scraper teeth, and bolted connections using M16 × 45 mm countersunk-head bolts
