Project overview
At the Ironmaking Plant – Hoa Phat Dung Quat, dust and fine material particles from coke, sinter and pellets are collected through dust extraction hoods installed above the conveyors. The dust stream then passes through a duct network across different levels, converges into the main duct and is conveyed to the material storage silo.
The material particles are small, hard and sharp. When moving at high velocity through the dust extraction system, they continuously impact the internal surfaces, particularly at the extraction hood inlets and at bends and elbows. During the site survey, GAC identified multiple locations that had worn through and required patch welding. Dust leakage caused material loss, affected the surrounding environment and increased the energy consumption of the extraction system.
Based on the existing condition, GAC proposed redesigning the extraction hoods, duct sections, bends and elbows for each specific location within the existing system. The replacement components were internally lined with Kalcret hard compound at a thickness of 20–30 mm, focusing protection on surfaces directly exposed to the dust and material particle stream.
Customer challenges
Ductwork suffered wear-through
The dust stream contains hard, sharp particles that continuously erode the internal surfaces of the ductwork
Bends and elbows were subject to severe erosion
At flow-direction changes, the dust stream creates concentrated impact, causing bends and elbows to wear rapidly
Multiple locations required patch welding
Extraction hoods, ducts and elbows developed wear-through at multiple locations and required repairs during operation
Dust and material losses
Perforated areas allowed dust to escape, resulting in material losses and affecting the performance of the dust extraction system
CURRENT CONDITION OF THE ORE CHUTE DUST EXTRACTION SYSTEM
Extraction hoods, ductwork and elbows showed wear and perforation at multiple locations after prolonged operation
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
IMPROVE EROSION RESISTANCE
Protect the internal surfaces of extraction hoods and ductwork against the continuous impact of dust streams containing hard, sharp material particles
REDUCE DUCT WEAR-THROUGH
Focus protection on locations subjected to severe erosion, particularly extraction hood inlets and bends and elbows
ENSURE COMPATIBILITY WITH THE EXISTING SYSTEM
Design replacement assemblies for each location to simplify duct removal, connection and installation within limited maintenance windows
Construction process
Survey the existing condition
GAC identified wear-through locations on extraction hoods, ductwork and elbows throughout the system
Analyze the erosion mechanism
The dust stream contains hard, sharp particles moving at high velocity, continuously eroding the internal surfaces
Design for each specific location
Extraction hoods, duct sections, bends and elbows were designed to match the dimensions and geometry of the existing system
Apply Kalcret hard compound lining
Replacement components were lined with 20–30 mm-thick Kalcret, depending on the duct diameter
Fabricate at the workshop
The equipment assemblies were fabricated and the wear-resistant lining was completed at the GAC workshop before delivery to the site
Replace on site
Existing duct sections were cut out and replaced with the prefabricated assemblies, followed by completion of the connections and coating work
Project results
COMPLETED THE EROSION PROTECTION SOLUTION
A Kalcret lining solution was established for extraction hoods, ductwork, bends and elbows at locations directly exposed to the material dust stream
COMPLETED LOCATION-SPECIFIC DESIGNS
Design dossier GAC.HPDC.0037 comprises 22 drawing items, including extraction hoods, branch ducts, main extraction ducts and elbows for individual locations throughout the system
