Project overview
On April 11, 2024, Gia Anh Investment Trading Co., Ltd. (GAC) delivered 169 bimetallic steel liner plates for the slag chute system at Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Complex.
The slag chute system conveys steel slag through the conveyor system to the crushing, magnetic separation, and screening stages before the material is transferred to the finished-product silo. After a period of operation, the discharge chutes began to show wear, causing dust generation and steel slag spillage.
Previously, the worn areas had been patch-welded using 14 mm SS400 steel or 10 mm Hardox 500. However, this solution did not meet the operating requirements, and perforated areas still required repair or replacement after a relatively short period.
To extend the service life of the system, GAC proposed using bimetallic steel liner plates, adding material-retaining ribs, and positioning welded stud bolts on the back of the liner plates. GAC expects the new solution to provide a service life of approximately 12 months for the slag chute system.
Customer challenges
Discharge chute wear
After a period of operation, wear began to develop on the discharge chutes
Dust generation and slag spillage
Wear on the chutes caused dust generation and slag spillage
Frequent patch welding and replacement required
The worn areas had previously been patch-welded using 14 mm SS400 steel or 10 mm Hardox 500, but still required repair and replacement after a short period
Need to protect the fastening bolts
The fastening bolts must be positioned to minimize wear and reduce the risk of liner plate detachment during operation
CURRENT CONDITION OF THE SLAG PROCESSING HOPPER
The liner plates inside the hopper have worn through

Fabricate and deliver 169 bimetallic steel liner plates for the slag chute system
EXPECTED SERVICE LIFE
GAC expects the new solution to provide a service life of approximately 12 months for the slag chute system
IMPROVE SYSTEM PROTECTION
Combine bimetallic steel liners, material-retaining ribs, and welded stud bolts on the back to minimize wear during operation
Project execution process
Assess the existing condition
Assess wear on the discharge chutes, together with dust generation and steel slag spillage
Evaluate the previous solution
Evaluate the previous repair solution, worn areas were patch-welded using 14 mm SS400 steel or 10 mm Hardox 500 but still required repair or replacement after a short period
Select bimetallic steel liner plates
GAC proposed using bimetallic wear-resistant steel liner plates for the slag chute system
Add material-retaining ribs
Material-retaining ribs were added to the liners to extend their service life during operation
Install welded stud bolts
The fastening bolts were stud-welded to the back of the liner plates to minimize wear and reduce the risk of liner plate detachment
Complete and deliver
GAC completed and delivered 169 bimetallic steel liner plates on April 11, 2024
