Project Overview
In April 2023, Gia Anh Investment Trading Co., Ltd. carried out a fabrication and installation project for the wear protection of Sinter Wind Box I at Hoa Phat Steel Plant. Following an on-site inspection, GAC selected a solution to completely replace the existing wind box with a new one fabricated from Hardox 500 wear-resistant steel.
The wind box draws hot air from the ore conveyor system to ensure an even temperature distribution from top to bottom. Located beneath the sinter bed, the wind box draws hot gas through the ore material, helping distribute the temperature evenly from top to bottom. The extracted gas stream carries dust and hard, sharp sintered ore particles, causing abrasive wear to the hopper and wind box ducting during operation.
In addition to abrasive wear, the wind box is subjected to high pressure from the strong, hot gas flow generated by the induced-draft fan, as well as continuous temperature fluctuations as the sintered ore moves across the sinter bed. Therefore, the replacement material had to provide both wear resistance and heat resistance.
The entire wind box was cut, welded, assembled, and finished at the GAC workshop in Ngoc Lang, My Hao, Hung Yen before being transported to the site. On site, GAC dismantled the existing wind box, installed the new system, performed final inspections, and handed it over to the customer.
Customer challenges
Hot gas flow and high pressure
The wind box beneath the sinter bed is continuously exposed to strong, hot gas flow and high pressure generated by the induced-draft fan
Hard, sharp dust and ore particles
The gas flow carries dust and sharp sintered ore particles, causing abrasive wear to the hopper and wind box ducting
Continuous temperature fluctuations
As the sintered ore moves across the sinter bed, the wind box undergoes continuous temperature fluctuations. The replacement material must provide both wear resistance and heat resistance
Combined wear and heat resistance requirements
The operating conditions of the wind box require a replacement material that provides both wear resistance and resistance to elevated temperatures
CURRENT CONDITION OF THE SINTER WIND BOX
The wind box surface is exposed to high-pressure hot air and dust
Project Objectives
REPLACE THE SINTER WIND BOX
Completely replace the existing wind box with a new system based on the solution determined after the on-site inspection
USE HARDOX 500 STEEL
Fabricate the entire new wind box from Hardox 500 wear-resistant steel to meet the operating requirements under abrasive wear and fluctuating temperatures
EXECUTE FROM WORKSHOP TO SITE
GAC carries out the full scope from material supply and workshop fabrication to transportation, dismantling, installation, and site completion
Project execution process
Site condition assessment
Inspect the wind box beneath the sinter bed and assess the effects of hot gas flow, dust, ore particles, and temperature fluctuations during operation
Select the replacement solution
Following the on-site inspection, GAC selected a solution to completely replace Sinter Wind Box I with a new unit fabricated from Hardox 500 wear-resistant steel
Cut the components
Cut the wind box components from Hardox 500 plate to the required dimensions and shapes
Weld and assemble the wind box
Weld and assemble the cut components to form the complete wind box structure
Completion and transportation
Complete wind box fabrication at the GAC workshop, then transport it to site for installation
Dismantling, installation and handover
Dismantle the existing wind box, install the new system, perform final inspections, and hand it over to the customer
Project results
COMPLETED HARDOX 500 WIND BOX
The new sinter wind box was fabricated and completed using Hardox 500 wear-resistant steel according to the solution proposed by GAC following the site inspection
COMPLETE EXECUTION FROM WORKSHOP TO SITE
GAC supplied the materials, fabricated the wind box at its workshop, transported it to the site, and directly carried out the on-site installation
COMPLETED INSTALLATION AND HANDOVER
The new wind box was installed at the sintering area, subjected to final inspection, and handed over to the customer
“We highly appreciate Gia Anh’s professionalism and ability to meet the project schedule. The KALCRET cast lining solution has helped improve the operational reliability of the ore conveying pipeline system at Dung Quat while significantly reducing annual maintenance costs. Completing the delivery 20 days ahead of schedule was a highly commendable achievement.”
