ABRESIST – Cast basalt pipes
ABRESIST cast basalt has been successfully used for decades as a versatile wear protection material across a wide range of industrial applications. Depending on the application and component geometry, it can operate at temperatures of up to 350°C (662°F). When incorporated as original equipment, ABRESIST provides an effective solution for preventing wear before it occurs.
During the manufacturing process, carefully selected natural basalt is melted, cast into molds, and then transferred to annealing furnaces. This process enables the production of precision-cast cylinders with inside diameters ranging from 40 to 525 mm for straight pipelines and pipe bends. Special cast basalt shapes are also available for larger-diameter pipelines and other industrial equipment.
ABRESIST features an extremely hard and smooth surface with outstanding resistance to most acids and alkalis. These properties make it particularly suitable for pipeline systems exposed to both severe abrasion and chemical corrosion.
Although the concept of melting stone dates back centuries, the melting of basalt was first explored through laboratory experiments in the late nineteenth century. Early developments were hindered by crystallization issues and unsuitable application methods. In the early 1920s, Kalenborn successfully developed basalt-based wear protection materials. Today, marketed under the trade name ABRESIST, cast basalt has become a globally proven solution for industrial wear protection.
Properties:
- Extremely hard and smooth surface for improved material flow
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Suitable for chemically aggressive environments
- FDA approved
- Maximum operating temperature of 350°C
